Punjab’s eco-friendly public transport program is taking a major step forward. The government has completed preparations to launch electric bus services in 10 more cities across the province. A fleet of 200 electric buses has already been delivered and is ready to serve commuters in these areas.
The Chief Minister of Punjab will officially inaugurate the electric bus service on November 19, 2025, marking another milestone in the province’s efforts to provide sustainable and efficient public transportation.
Cities to Benefit from the New Routes
The new electric bus routes will start operating in the following cities:
- Rawalpindi
- Chakwal
- Jhelum
- Gujar Khan
- Toba Tek Singh
- Jhang
- Bahawalnagar
- Rahim Yar Khan
- Rajanpur
- Bahawalpur
These cities will now have modern, environmentally friendly buses that will provide reliable transport for residents, reducing the dependence on fuel-based vehicles.
Electric Buses Already Operational in Other Cities
The Transport Minister shared that electric buses are already running successfully in Lahore and 10 other cities, where nearly 120,000 passengers travel daily. The new addition of 10 cities will further expand this network, making public transport faster, cleaner, and more accessible for the people of Punjab.
Benefits for Environment and Urban Mobility
Officials highlighted that the electric bus initiative is part of a broader plan to protect the environment and reduce air pollution. By replacing traditional diesel buses with electric ones, the province aims to:
- Lower carbon emissions
- Reduce noise pollution
- Promote sustainable urban transport
- Promote public transport over private car use.
The government believes that these changes will not only improve air quality but also provide commuters with a safe, comfortable, and efficient travel experience.
Future Plans for Public Transport Expansion
The Punjab government has announced that this is just the beginning. In the coming phase, more cities will receive electric buses, expanding the province’s green transport network. Officials are working on identifying additional routes and cities where public transport services can be improved with eco-friendly buses.
They also plan to integrate technology and real-time tracking systems to make the service more convenient for daily commuters. The focus will remain on accessibility, sustainability, and reducing traffic congestion across the province.
A Step Toward Modern and Sustainable Cities
The introduction of electric buses in 10 new cities shows Punjab’s commitment to modernizing public transport while caring for the environment. Citizens are expected to benefit from cleaner air, lower travel costs, and improved mobility. The success of this program may serve as a model for other provinces in Pakistan looking to adopt green transportation solutions.
